Man damages drainpipe after being stood up

A BRIDLINGTON man kicked and damaged a plastic drainpipe at a hostel for homeless and vulnerable women after discovering a woman he had arranged to meet wasn't there.

Arron Mark Spring, 18, of Blackburn Avenue, and previously of North Street, pleaded guilty to a single charge of criminal damage when he appeared in court last week.

He also admitted being in breach of a conditional discharge imposed by the Hull youth court in January of last year.

The court heard that a security officer at the Doorstep hostel in Hull had been approached by Spring, who asked if an unnamed woman was there, on the evening of May 5 last year.

When told she wasn't, Spring swore and asked the officer to ring a mobile phone number, from which there was no reply.

Prosecutor Heather Levett said that, as the officer returned to her office, she had heard a cracking noise and CCTV footage showed Spring kicking a plastic drainpipe.

Spring was abusive towards her after he was told to leave the area, Miss Levett added.

The bottom section of the drainpipe was later found to be damaged during a routine patrol of the site.

Ed Cunnah, mitigating, admitted the breach of the conditional discharge, which was imposed for theft of DVDs from the former Zavvi store in Hull, on his client's behalf.

He said Spring had made arrangements to meet the woman, who lived at the hostel, and kicked out "in frustration" after discovering she was not there.

He added that Spring had not realised that the drainpipe had been damaged until the police spoke to him about it in November. He had then been bailed again by the police before appearing in court last Wednesday.

Sentencing, presiding magistrate Ian Male told Spring this was "not the sort of behaviour that can go unpunished, particularly when you have been told not to offend in those 12 months."

He was fined 35 for the damage plus 20 for breaching the conditional discharge and ordered to pay 109.94 in compensation to the hostel.

Costs of 85 and a 15 victim surcharge were also imposed.

When asked if he understood the sentence, Spring replied: "Crystal."
