Man brandished metal bar in Bridlington town centre

A DRUNK man caught brandishing a metal bar in Bridlington town centre has been given a 12-month community order.

Glen Landon, 23, of Burstall Hill, Bridlington, pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon when he appeared before Magistrates on Friday.

The court heard that supermarket worker Landon had been out drinking with his brother in a Bridlington nightclub when a fight broke out.

Landon went to protect his brother and ended up with a black eye, swelling and bruising to his face and blood- shot eyes.

After the incident, Landon was spotted on CCTV waiting in the doorway of H Samuel jewellery shop on Promenade brandishing a metal bar at passers-by.

The police were called to the scene by a witness who reported that he had been threatened by a man with a metal bar who had stepped out of the shop doorway and said 'I am going to do you'.

CCTV footage of Landon raising the bar towards another group of men was also shown in court.

Speaking in his defence, Nick Clay said that Landon admitted that he was drunk at the time of the incident and 'did not have a clear recollection' of what he was doing with a metal bar.

"The earlier fight was really what was behind what happened later," said Mr Clay.

"In his drunk and aggrieved state, he is half hoping to get these people back and half hoping to defend himself."

The case was stood down for a probation report and upon returning to the courtroom Landon was sentenced to a 12-month community order with 80 hours unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay 85 to cover part of the court costs.

Sentencing Landon, presiding magistrate Roger Evans said: "In one view this was a serious matter, holding something and threatening somebody with it is not the sort of behaviour that is acceptable.

"But we do understand you are remorseful and we are aware that there was no injury caused."
