Magistrates 'fed up' with drunken behaviour in Bridlington

BRIDLINGTON'S magistrates are "fed up" with people who cause drunken disorder in the town.

That was the rebuke delivered to 35-year-old Stuart Selby, of Bessingby Road, after he pleaded guilty to a single charge of being drunk and disorderly at a hearing in the town last week.

Imposing a 12 month conditional discharge, presiding magistrate Ian Male told him the sentence "effectively for you means don't do it again.

But he added: "We're getting a little bit fed up of people in this court who go out, get drunk and cause trouble.

"We don't want to see you again, Mr Selby, and don't get drunk again."

Prosecutor Heather Levett earlier told the hearing that the incident had happened in Prince Street on the evening of January 16.

Selby had been in the New Inn public house until, at around 10pm, the landlord refused to serve him because he was drunk and asked him to leave the premises.

Though he initially refused, he did leave the pub, before returning a short time later.

He then pushed a member of the pub's staff after they had followed the landlord's instructions not to serve Selby.

As Selby left, he threatened the licensee, saying: "I'll knock you out. I used to be a boxer."

When he was arrested he carried on being abusive and threatening in the street in front of police officers. His abusive behaviour continued on the journey to the police station, the court was told.

Mitigating, Selby told the bench: "I'm very sorry for what happened. It was very silly and it won't happen again."

He was also ordered to pay 85 costs.
