Maggie may get her way on Bridlington's Gypsey Race
EXCITING things may be in store for a neglected area of the Gypsey Race after residents and officials recently met to discuss its fate.
The Free Press reported last month that residents along St John's Avenue and surrounding houses that backed on to the stream were fed up with its neglected state.
Maggie Masters, of St John's Avenue, said that the area was litter-strewn, overgrown, full of dog muck and was often used as a meeting point for intimidating gangs of youths.
Just two weeks ago it was targeted by vandals who pulled down a safety fence beside the stream.
With the help of Coun Geoff Pickering, a meeting was arranged between residents, officials from the Environment Agency, councillors and members of the Local Action Area Team to address the problem.
Coun Pickering said that it is not a case of residents "being able to wake up in the morning and the area's magically transformed" but he is confident that if all parties work together, something can be done.
"There isn't one pot of gold and no one person has full responsibility for the area. This is a partnership and it's down to us all," he said.
"Hopefully we can get something started, let's give it a go."
There is a split in responsibility for the Gypsey Race between residents whose land backs on to it, the council and the Environment Agency and this has complicated matters and hindered any action being taken.
Maggie Masters, who has been trying for weeks to get the area cleaned up, was happy with the outcome of the meeting.
"It was brilliant that so many people came to the meeting, I feel that the residents are right behind me.
"My house doesn't back on to the race so it doesn't directly affect me, but I often walk along it and the state of it is just depressing. It's full of rubbish and looks horrible, when it could be so nice.
"With all the regeneration plans for improving the Race in the town centre, now is surely the best time to clean the whole thing up.
Maggie is now looking to set up a Gypsey Race Action Team.
