Maggie celebrates her 100th birthday

MAGGIE Roberts' life has spanned two World Wars, the sinking of the Titanic and the introduction of television amongst many other monumental occasions.

And last month Maggie celebrated her 100th birthday in style with all her friends at the Red House Residential Care Home, St Annes Road where she now lives.

Maggie was born in Warrington, Cheshire, on January 11, 1910 and attended Padgate School where she used to accompany her caretaker mother every morning to help with the cleaning duties.

Spirited Maggie used to find the canes in each classroom and push them between the floorboards to protect her fellow classmates from being punished with them.

Maggie's daughter Phyllis said: "She told no-one about hiding the canes, then in 1990 my grandson went to the same school and one Monday he came home saying that they had a new floor laid in the school assembly hall.

"When the workmen pulled up the old floorboards they found 92 canes hidden underneath!

"Maggie said, 'that was me'! Her secret was out at last."

For the last eight years Maggie has lived with her daughter Phyllis in Flamborough until recently moving into Red House Residential Care Home where she said she is very happy and well cared-for.

Maggie celebrated her birthday with a party at the home and was delighted to receive a special card from the Queen.
