John Kelly admits murder of his wife Pauline Kelly

THE husband of a mother-of-three found with multiple stab injuries at a Bridlington flat has pleaded guilty to her murder.

John Kelly, 46, who at the time of the attack in August last year was living with his wife Pauline, 44, at a flat in Trinity Road, Bridlington, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court last Wednesday.

His case was adjourned and he was remanded in custody to return to Sheffield Crown Court on July 24 for pre-sentence reports and sentencing.

At an earlier hearing in Hull, Kelley had refused to appear in court, saying through his defence counsel he could not bear to hear the details of the attack read out in public or face members of Mrs Kelly's family who were in court.

At previous hearings he had claimed he could not remember the ferocity with which he attacked his partner Pauline Kelly with a knife in her own home.

He had also claimed that he had problems with alcohol.

Police found Mrs Kelly's body at the flat they shared on August 26 last year.

The couple had only been married a short time and Mrs Kelly left behind two sons aged 20 and 24 and a daughter aged 28.

At the time of his arrest, a neighbour who knew the couple told the Free Press that in the months leading up to her death Mrs Kelly had become increasingly withdrawn and spent a lot of time in bed.

"She was very depressed," said the neighbour.

"Every time I went in the flat she was in bed or drunk.

"She obviously had problems."

She said the couple had only known each other for a few weeks before they married late the previous year.
