Joan's nutty about knitting for charity
JOAN LONG loves to knit. Over the years 74-year-old Joan of Kingfisher Drive, Bridlington, has put her needles to work to create a huge range of items, hats, baby clothes, jumpers, and more – and almost all for charities.
"I'll knit for anybody," said Joan.
True to her word she has just finished her latest batch of tiny woollen hats which earn money for Age Concern.
It is how they earn money for the charity which is the interesting bit.
Joan is one of hundreds of knitters all over the country to take part in a marketing campaign by The Big Knit.
It is a joint campaign between Innocent smoothie drinks and the elderly person's charity. They knit small woollen hats which fit over the top of the smoothie bottles sold through Sainsbury's supermarkets.
For every bottle sold 50p goes to Age Concern to help keep older people warm in Winter.
Last year she knitted just over two dozen for the campaign and this year she has just completed three dozen for Innocent's Christmas campaign so they should be appearing on supermarket shelves any time now.
"I think it is a good idea and I hope more people will do it. It keeps you busy," said Joan who says she doesn't spend all day knitting, normally it is in the evenings while she is watching TV.
The wool sometimes comes from odds and ends she can pick up in charity shops although recently when she ran out her husband Wilfred, 79, bought some wool as his contribution to the cause.
Joan is currently looking for a charitable organisation to take a load of other knitted items of normal size clothing off her hands, ideally to be sent abroad to countries where it is really needed.
