In jail again on handling charge

A CRIMINAL with a record for handling stolen goods soon after burglaries in Bridlington has been jailed again for nine months.

Craig Wilcox, 34, had been released early from a two-year prison sentence only to be caught within a month selling two stolen silver bracelets and a silver chain to a Bridlington jeweller.

Wilcox, of Promenade, Bridlington, appeared at Hull Crown Court on Monday (Feb 6) for sentence after being convicted of a charge of handling stolen goods at Beverley Magistrates’ Court.

Crown barrister Jharna Jobes said Wilcox had a record of 21 court appearances for a string of convictions. She said he was in possession of jewellery taken from a burglary in Bridlington, between November 30 and December 7.

On December 6 last year Wilcox was selling the jewellery for £18, the day before the burglary victims returned from holiday.

The next day his brother Alan Wilcox, 33, was selling gold jewellery taken in the burglary for £130.

Alan Wilcox was given 16-weeks imprisonment for the offence of handling stolen goods in an earlier court hearing which influence the maximum his brother could be given.

Craig Wilcox was twice jailed for four years in 2001 and 2008 for handling stolen goods soon after break-ins in Bridlington.

His defence barrister Claire Holmes said Craig Wilcox co-operated with police after his arrest, and believed he deserved not to be prosecuted, but since had been recalled to prison.

Ms Holmes said Wilcox’s brother had the higher value items plus a mobile telephone, but neither were responsible for the burglary.

Recorder Anton Lodge, QC, told Wilcox: “You were released from prison in October and within a short time you were handling stolen goods again.

“If people like you and your brother did not handle stolen goods perhaps there might be fewer of them.” He sentenced Wilcox, who stood stone-faced in the dock, to nine-months imprisonment.
