A Bridlington man has narrowly missed out on the title of Young Fish Fryer for the Year at The National Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Awards last Tuesday.

Cori Standing, 21, who works at Fish and Chips at 149 on Marton Road, came fourth overall in the UK and second placed of the English entries, at the lavish ceremony in London.

Over 600 people entered the Young Fish Fryer of the Year Award and only two points separated those from second to eighth place.

Making it into the top five is a fantastic achievement for Cori who also got into the top 25 in the competition last year.

Cori, of Kirkgate in Bridlington, said: “It was brilliant to get that far in such a prestigious competition, they look at your methods and how well you work as part of a team.

“I can’t wait to enter it again next year and hopefully do even better.”

Fish and Chips at 149 was also up for the Staff Training and Development Award but again was narrowly beaten.

The shop places great emphasis on staff training, ensuring all workers have a thorough knowledge of their products and where the fish are sourced, whilst concentrating on great customer service.

Matthew Silk, co-owner of Fish and Chips at 149 said: “It was a really tough field this year in both categories, there were some fantastic entrants.

“We are a little disappointed not to have won the Staff Training and Development Award after all the hard work we’ve put in, the shop is like an academy where our staff gain qualifications and learn about the industry.”

“We’ve got some exciting plans for the coming year, we’re going to introduce gluten-free meals and wet fish that customers can cook at home, all with quality non-processed ingredients.”

Fish and Chips at 149 may have missed out on the awards at this year’s Fish and Chip Shop Awards but the business is no stranger to success having picked up the main Fish and Chip Shop of The Year Award in 2011, gaining a rave review in a national food magazine and appearing on ITV’s Countrywise series in the summer.
