Freemasons support charities

Freemasons have handed a cheque for more than £150,000 to air ambulance charities.

North and East Riding freemasons presented the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Great North Air Ambulance with donations totalling 151,000 at their annual meeting in York.

Among the masonic lodges which contributed to the total, five are based in Bridlington.

They are the St John of Bridlington Lodge, Burlington Lodge, Londesbrough Lodge, Old Bridlingtonian Lodge and Bridlington Bay Lodge.

Provincial grand master Richard Anderson launched an appeal a year ago to raise 75,000 to benefit both charities.

The appeal was so successful it raised more than twice the target.

Making the presentation, Mr Anderson said: "Freemasons play an active part in the community and are pleased to help these extremely worthwhile and needy charities.

"The air ambulances play an invaluable part in saving lives and rescuing victims of terrible accidents."

The donations back up annual grants made each year to every air ambulance charity in the country by the freemasons' national charity.
