Fire at sheltered housing complex

A WOMAN suffered serious injuries and four others are in hospital for smoke inhalation after a fire at a sheltered housing complex.

A total of nine elderly residents of East Riding of Yorkshire Council owned Chantry Court off Lawson Road, Bridlington, had to be rescued by firefighters after a fire in a flat on the complex.

It happened around 5.30am today and more than 30 other residents were evacuated to a communal room on the site as six fire appliances were called to tackle the blaze.

The flat at the heart of the fire suffered serious damage but nearby rooms suffered only minor smoke damage.

Officers from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service have praised the work of fire crews and the local complex warden who helped them locate people still inside the building.

The cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation is continuing.
