Festive fun in Old Town
ONE of Bridlington's most popular events gets underway this weekend.
Old Town's Summer Festival starts on Saturday with a packed programme of attractions over nine days, including music, open gardens, markets, and a traditional show for plants, vegetables and home-made produce.
The Secret Gardens of Old Town, on Saturday and Sunday, is a chance to view some of the garden gems behind the facades of its historic buildings.
Some gardens will feature artists at work, and more art can be seen in the area's nine galleries.
On Saturday local artist Alison Peacock is building a new mystery sculpture of between 12ft and 15ft tall on Church Green.
On Sunday evening Priory Church hosts a concert by Priory Choir and Handbell Ringers with the Capriccio Singers, the first of several musical events.
Next Wednesday the popular East Yorkshire Motor Services Brass Band make a return visit to the Priory, and next Thursday school choirs entertain in the Young Voices in Concert event from 7pm, which is free.
Finally on the afternoon of July 12 the top class EMFEB Orchestra of young professionals will be leading a master class for young players at the Priory and in the evening partnering the Festival Chorus.
The Priory is also the venue for one of several new attractions this year. There is a flower festival called All Things Bright and Beautiful from next Thursday, July 10 to Sunday July 13.
Once again the cobbled Market Place will see a Food and Craft Fayre on Sunday, July 13, which this year includes a World of Food Cafe offering cuisine from many different cultures.
The same Sunday sees another new feature, the Old Town Show.
Held on Church Green it combines a traditional produce show with classes in fruit, flowers and vegetables for the public to enter, plus much more of interest and fun for all the family – including a demonstration of floristry, gardeners' question time, fun dog show with entry on the day, greyhound parade and more.
That also includes the unique Tales From the Igloo story telling session in the gardens of the Georgian Rooms in High Street from 11am.
Schedules for the show are available from Bridlington libraries, garden centres and Old Town shops including the Georgian Rooms.
