Electric blankets warning
ELECTRIC blankets are a real winter warmer, but they can also be lethal.
According to Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, some cheap electric blankets could be potentially dangerous as they may not comply with fire and electrical safety standards.
Also, how people use even good electric blankets, and how they store them can make them a danger.
Nor do they last forever. According to the Electrical Safety council if a blanket is more than 10 years old then get a new one.
When you buy a blanket, always look for the UK Safety Standard mark and never buy one second hand. Examples are BEAB approved of KEMA KEUR markings.
The fire service also advise always follow manufacturers instructions. For example, don't put an under blanket on top, and vice versa , check it regularly for signs of wear or damage and make sure your plug has only a three amp and not a 13 amp fuse in it.
Never use it whilst it is still folded, rucked or creased or use a hot water bottle at the same time, touch the blanket with wet hands or feet or use it if it is wet or damp.
Electric blankets should never be used on the bed of a helpless person, or an infant.
If you have had your blanket in store during the summer months make sure it is going to be safe to see you through the winter.
That includes checking for worn or frayed fabric, scorch marks or discolouration areas, wires poking through or damage to the flexible cable between the supply plug and the control or the control to the blanket. Also check the control does not make a buzzing sound when switched on or is giving off a smell.
It is a good idea to leave the blanked on the bed all year round, or put it flat on a spare bed. If not, loosely fold or roll it in a towel or plastic bag and store in a cool, dry place.
Avoid placing heavy items on top of it while it is being stored.
Finally, if you need to get rid of a blanket don't put it in the wheelie bin.
