Two Bridlington couples will today mark a special occasion before joining in with new year celebrations.

Gerald and Jean Sheard and Bernard and June Redshaw will both be celebrating their Diamond wedding anniversary marking 60 years since tying the knot. Married at Bridlington Priory on 31 December 1955, Bernard and June will celebrate with family and friends at Wolds Village in Bainton in January. The pair met through Bernard’s sisters who June was close friends with and they instantly connected.

When asked the secret to a long and happy marriage, June, 77, said: “My husband says it’s give and take. For us its been that but I’m not sure if it’s the same for everyone.

“This is what quite a number of people have said to me, that it’s an achievement to reach 60 years of marriage, looking back I see it is as not everyone reaches that age but we have been very fortunate.” The couple, who live in Barmston, have two children, Nicholas and Jane, and now have four grandsons Jeremy, Patrick, Alexander and James. Bernard, 79, said: “There’s been a few hardships along the way, there’s also been a lot more nice times.

“I’d go back and do it all again. It’s been 60 wonderful years.”

Gerald, 87, and Jean, 81, Sheard met at Coventry Fire Station where Gerald was a fire officer and Jean worked on the switchboard. The pair got married 1955 in Coventry before moving north to Bridlington in 1988 so they could retire by the seaside. Gerald said: “It is a real achievement to reach 60 years in marriage. Everyone has their ups and downs but we have come through them strong and we’re very happy together. The secret is to keep saying ‘yes dear’.” Their daughter Pat Rogers said: “I sometimes wonder how they have put up with each other but I am so proud of them. I’m really close with them and I have no idea what I’d have done without them.” They currently live on Middleton Court in Bridlington and are planning on having a family meal at the Friendly Forrester pub in January.
