Coastguard campaign

THE campaign to keep a base in Flamborough for a volunteer coastguard team is gathering momentum.

More than 500 names have already been added to a petition launched last week to keep their base at the former coastguards station in Lighthouse Road after the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the 70-year-old building no longer complied with fire safety regulations.

The Flamborough team say to move to Bridlington will extend response times. Having their vehicle and equipment in Flamborough means volunteers who live close to the base can reach emergencies within minutes, especially vital in their role as defibrilator equipped first responders.

The Coastguard Agency has extended its original two weeks notice to quit into April.

“It gives us a little more time to try and do something.

“We have had a great response to our petition which has been circulated in Flamborough and Bridlington. We are hoping to send it to Downing Street.

“This is not about the building being unsafe, it is about saving money,” said a team member who did not want to be identified.

The volunteers have also had offers of fund-raising help.

“If we can’t have the building because it hasn’t got a fire estape to the upper floors then we could manage with just a garage to keep our vehicle there,” he said.

Two members of the team live in Flamborough, with five others living in Bridlington.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has described the move as being necessary because the building does not comply with current fire safety regulations and denied it would increase response times.
