Chantry Court fire is arson
POLICE say the fire which gutted a flat at the elderly people’s sheltered housing complex in Bridlington was started deliberately.
A joint investigation into the exact cause is underway between police and fire and rescue services
The 63-year-old woman who lived in the flat, part of the council owned Chantry Court in Lawson Road, Bridlington, is said to be in a critical but stable condition in hospital in Hull suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.
The fire broke out around 5.30am today. Four other residents were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation and nine had to be evacuated by firefighters.
More than 30 elderly residents were evacuated from their flats to the safety of a communal area at the complex.
Firefighters have said the design of the building and its fire door protection prevented the spread of the fire to neighbouring rooms which only suffered minor smoke damage.
They also praised the efforts of the warden who helped firefighters locate people still inside the complex.
