Calls for 20mph limit near Bridlington Spa
A PETITION has been set up calling for a 20mph speed limit or traffic calming measures to be introduced on roads near Bridlington Spa.
The West Street and Surrounding Area Regeneration Group claims the current roadworks along South Marine Drive are causing drivers to cut through surrounding roads, including Richmond Street, Windsor Street and Windsor Crescent.
Speaking on behalf of the group, chairman Brett Dunn said: "We believe that the situation was bad anyway with speeding traffic, but it has increased and been highlighted by the roadworks along the seafront.
"West Street in particular is now being used as a rat-run for drivers wanting to avoid the temporary lights."
The roadworks in front of the Spa are part of the 5 million Spa environs redevelopment plan, which is not expected to be complete until next spring.
Ward Councillor Chad Chadwick supports local residents' views and has been in contact with the Highways Agency to try to find a solution.
"Residents are suffering because of traffic diverting down West Street and trying to beat the lights by using the other roads," he said.
"It is causing some concern for residents which I fully understand."
Once the petition has received sufficient support, it will be sent to East Riding of Yorkshire Council's environment and transport committee, which will consider the proposal. The petition is available to sign at Mr Dunn's Janie's Kitchen in West Street.
