Buses on the road by Bank Holiday

BRIDLINGTON'S new park and ride scheme should be up and running by Spring Bank Holiday.

This is slightly later than planned due to bad winter weather which delayed work on site.

The 1,000 space plus site on Bridlington's south cliff, a vital part of the town's integrated traffic management scheme, is designed to take the pressure off the town centre's summertime congested streets.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been giving more details of how it will work and unveiled the shuttle bus which will link it to the town.

The service will run between Easter and October between 9am and 6pm daily, but these may need to be adjusted to meet demand once it is up and running.

The shuttle bus, which will have an improved turning area in Belvedere Parade, will run into town along Belvedere Parade, South Marine Drive, and South Cliff Road, to a single stop at the harbour top in South Cliff Road. It will return via Hilderthorpe Road and Cardigan Road.

As with operating times, this may be adjusted to meet demand once the service starts operating.

It will have a flat rate of 3.50 a full day to park at the car park, the same cost as the current pay and display car park at South Cliff.

There are no lower fees for shorter stays.

Parking tickets will be issued with a voucher for use by car passengers for travel into and back from town on the shuttle or the land train. The number of passengers is entered at the time the ticket is bought.

Anyone can use the bus even if they haven't used the park and ride by buying a passenger voucher at the pay and display machine.

Fares for the land train will be collected by the conductor.

The park and ride car park can also be used by people not wanting to travel into town at a cost of 3.50 for a full day – the same charge as now.

Senior citizens bus passes cannot be used on this service.

It is also planned to use the park and ride car park and transfer buses when special events are being held at The Spa.

On these occasions the service would run into the evening, and new electronic message signs on the approaches to Bridlington would direct drivers to the park and ride event car parking.

The Spa events brochure and event tickets will include the postcode for the park and ride car park to enable "Sat Nav" to be set in advance of arrival.
