British Legion home manager found guilty of fraud
THE manager of a British Legion hotel has been found guilty of defrauding the charity out of more than £1,000 in false rail travel claims.
Stephanie Donkin, 51, of Market Place, Bridlington, appeared for trial at Bridlington Magistrates' Court on Monday and was found guilty on nine counts of fraud by false representation.
Magistrates adjourned her case for reports and sentencing on July 21.
The court heard that Donkin was the former manager of Alderson House British Legion Poppy Break hotel, in South Marine Drive, Bridlington, from January 2007 to August 2008, and had made several claims for rail travel on behalf of the charity totalling 1,159.50 – when the money had already been paid.
The charges related to dates between June 2007 and the end of July 2008 and involved four claims for 114, and others for 152, 171, 158, 137 and 85.50.
A spokesman for the British Legion, which runs the Bridlington Poppy Break hotel for serving and ex-servicemen and women and their dependents, said: "The Legion expects the highest standards of conduct from all its staff and will act swiftly to ensure we preserve our standing in the community.
"The court has made its decision, we cannot comment further."
