Bridlington's park and ride scheme to be open by Easter
BRIDLINGTON'S park and ride scheme should be up and running by Easter.
Around 70% of the 1,000 space car park on South Shore should be ready to use by an estimated 600 vehicles – each paying 3.50 a day, which includes the cost of reaching the town centre by shuttle bus or land train.
The complete project should be finished by June.
It is the first and biggest chunk of East Riding of Yorkshire Council's integrated transport plan.
The plan has attracted 5.7 million of Government funding, and is designed to ease Bridlington's chronic congestion during the summer season and improve conditions for visitors and residents.
Work is well underway on the cliff top park and ride site, which involves ground reinforcements, the laying of a plastic reinforced real grass base, and the demolition of the existing toilet block – which will be rebuilt together with new bus shelters and kiosks.
The site, in front of South Cliff Caravan Park, was already a pay and display park with access from Belvedere Parade.
A new turning area for a shuttle bus service is being developed at Belvedere Parade.
John Lister, the council's head of Bridlington Renaissance, said the 3.50 parking fee was per vehicle and designed to match existing rates.
He said: "Users will get a three part ticket – one for parking, the second for the journey into the town and the third for the return journey, which can be used either on the shuttle bus or land train link."
The single deck, low floor shuttle bus is expected to be a 20-minute circular service between the park and ride site and a stop by the harbour, close to South Cliff Gardens.
The land train link, which will also leave from Belvedere Parade, will take passengers to and from the boating pool area near The Spa.
Mr Lister said: "We anticipate the services will run between around 9.30am and 6pm, but that may change with experience and demand.
"The Spa itself will have the option of using it for shows or special events when the bus could drop off or pick up passengers near Horsforth Avenue."
A number of caravans on the council owned South Cliff Caravan Park are being relocated to allow a new access road to run through the site from the A165.
Work is already underway on creating a new entrance for this. A new roundabout at this point is already near to completion.
Related roadworks or alterations already underway to help smooth the traffic flow, include:
l A new roundabout on the A614 at the Carnaby end of Bridlington Bay Road, which is nearing completion.
l Changing the B&Q roundabout on Bessingby Road into a traffic signal controlled junction, which would see St James Road – currently one way from the roundabout – being closed at its Bessingby Road junction and become two-way.
The Integrated Transport Plan is part of Bridlington’s Area Action Plan and town centre scheme to shape its regeneration and future.
It has already been though a final public consultation exercise and is being revised prior to being submitted to the Planning Inspectorate.
