Bridlington businesses up for top tourism awards
BRIDLINGTON and the surrounding area are well represented on the shortlist for East Yorkshire's first ever Real Yorkshire Tourism Awards.
A number of businesses and organisations have been nominated for an award, which are presented to the best tourist hotspots in the whole of East Yorkshire.
The awards have been organised by Visit Hull and East Yorkshire (VHEY), which received hundreds of entries from local cafes, restaurants, guesthouses and attractions.
RSPB Bempton is among the nominees for the Real Smile award, which is voted for by the public to crown the region's favourite overall tourist location.
The RSPB site faces some stiff competition from Carabosse, Hull Truck Theatre and Skidby Windmill, but communications manager Margaret Overend, is just delighted to be nominated.
She said: "It is absolutely fantastic, we can't wait for the awards, it will be like the tourism oscars!
"It is a great credit to the effort and hard work all of our staff and volunteers who always give people a great welcome. It is even nicer to know that the public will have a say in deciding who the winner is."
Cafes Tea@Thyme and Coffee Coast have been nominated as part of the Real Cuppa award.
Stephanie Walters, who along with her husband David, has been the proprietor of Tea@Thyme on Prospect Street for only seven months, said: "We are absolutely chuffed to bits with the nomination.
"Somebody has put us forward for the award, it must have been one of our customers, so it is nice to know that they are happy with what we have been doing."
Neil Abbott, who has been the owner at Coffee Coast on South Cliff Road for three years, said: "We're delighted we have been nominated, it is not only good for ourselves but it publicises Bridlington as a whole, which is great for tourism here," said Neil, who is famed for making the best coffee in town.
"We have lots of regular customers coming from far afield for our coffee, I spent a lot of time trying to find the right type and took training to make the perfect cup."

Kilham Hall and Wold Cottage in Wold Newton have also been put forward for the Best Yorkshire Breakfast award.
Both have also been nominated for the Real Night's Sleep (serviced) award alongside Lincoln House in Bridlington.
Lincoln House owners Sylvia and John Wright were "extremely surprised" to see they had been nominated. Sylvia said: "It is nice to think that one of our guests nominated us for this award, it just goes to show that people do appreciate it when you put the effort in."
Other local nominees include Carlton Apartments in Bridlington and Field House Farm Cottages in Sewerby, who will battle it out for the Real Night's Sleep (non-serviced) award.
Andrew Bell, owner of the Carlton Apartments at The Crescent in Bridlington, said: "I was pleased to get the surprise, but we do work hard to try and give guests a memorable experience at the apartments.
"We see ourselves as the ideal alternative to a hotel because we still deliver a four star service, but there are a lot of excellent places in Bridlington and hopefully these awards will continue to raise the profile of the town."
Angela Foster, who along with her husband John own Field House Farm Cottages in Sewerby, was "delighted" to recieve the recognition.
"It's lovely to get the nomination, we've been nominated four times before for White Rose tourism awards, but haven't won. Maybe we can go one better this time," said Angela, who is a member of Farm Stay, an organisation of tourist accomodation on farms.
"It will be a nice night out for us and the staff when we go to the award ceremony."
The winners will be announced in a glitzy award ceremony in Cottingham on March 25.
