Bridlington winners urge entries for tourism awards

FORMER winners of the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards (REYTAs) from the Bridlington area have urged others to enter the 2013 contest before this month’s deadline.
The awards, organised by Visit Hull and East Yorkshire (VHEY), celebrate the stars of the region’s growing tourism industry, which is worth £615 million a year.
Various businesses, including restaurants, pubs, hotels, self-catering providers, tourism operators and attractions, have been urged to enter the 2013 competition before the deadline of January 14.
Gill Mellor, of Wold Top Brewery, at Wold Newton, who won the Remarkable Fayre award in 2012, said it was important for businesses to enter the REYTAs. “Winning made a real difference to us because of the publicity it brings and the promotion opportunities it allows,” she said.
“Suppliers like us, that are not a visitor attraction, can often get forgotten about but of course play an important role in helping promote the uniqueness of East Yorkshire through our unique products.”
Her comments were echoed by Andrew Aldis, general manager of the Spa Bridlington, who were winners of the Conference Venue award in 2011 and again in 2012.
“The REYTAs logo and that award is really important to us,” he said.
“We include it on all our promotional leaflets and in our presentations and it is viewed as something that recognises the quality of service and facilities we offer.
“To win recognition and acclaim like this can actually be a key factor in us bringing new business to the resort.”
John Foster, of High Barn Cottages, at Sewerby, winners of a Remarkable Newcomer award in the 2012 REYTAs, said the awards were a great marketing boost for the business.
“We support the awards because we see it as great from a marketing point of view in what is a very competitive field. But in doing the awards there is also a second benefit.
“The process is quite exacting and it forces you to analyse what you are doing and as a result you inevitably raise your game.”
People can enter themselves and others in 13 categories for the chance to win a REYTA at the finals on Thursday March 14.
The winners, who will be selected by a panel of independent experts, will have the chance to progress to the national Visit England tourism awards.
These include two new awards in the “Access for all” and “sustainable tourism” categories.
In addition, the VHEY board will present an additional REYTA to the individual who, in their view, has made the greatest contribution to tourism in the region in the past year.
