Bridlington Lifeboat moves back into station

BRIDLINGTON’S all-weather lifeboat is safely back at its station on South Marine Drive two weeks ahead of schedule.
The Marine Engineer had been moved to a temporary location while Yorkshire Water began work its work to improve the bathing water around Bridlington.
Yorkshire Water project manager Duncan Warner said: “We’d like to thank the RNLI for their patience during our work on the promenade.
“Our bathing water improvement scheme will bring huge benefits to Bridlington but we understand there will be some short term disruption. We’ll continue to do everything we can to minimise our impact on and near the promenade since we know how important it is to maintain access to the beach and sea.”
The boat had been stationed on the South Promenade over the Christmas period, while metal sheets were installed along the lifeboat slipway.
These will support the slipway as Yorkshire Water’s contractors Morgan Sindall Grontmij build a new storm water pumping station. Using innovative technology the sheets were pushed into the ground and steel anchors inserted for additional support.
Stewart McKie, coxswain at Bridlington RNLI, said: “I fully support Yorkshire Water’s work to improve the sea water at Bridlington.
“While it was inconvenient to relocate the lifeboat to the promenade Yorkshire Water’s contractors have more than met the deadline they offered us. It’s great that we’ve been able to move the lifeboat back even earlier than expected.”
The project will provide a new pumping station, sewer and outfall pipe which the company hopes will help Bridlington’s beaches hit strict new European Union water quality guidelines.
The contractors have continued on site despite the snowy conditions and will soon start the next stage of work which is to demolish the existing toilet block on the South Promenade.
At Palace car park the team have started to excavate the first tunnel shaft, from where a tunnelling machine - which will excavate space for a new sewer - will be launched from when it arrives in March or April.
South Marine Drive is already closed southbound from Horsforth Avenue to Belgrave Road until April 2014 while the works continue.
