Bridlington grandmother’s murder investigation is reopened

A COLD case team of detectives have re-opened the investigation into the murder of a Bridlington grandmother after 15 years in the hope of finally bringing her killer to justice.
Winnie Deighton, 59, was brutally attacked and raped before being left for dead on a patch of grass at the corner of Thornton Road and Bessingby Road, near her home in Remembrance Court on June 10, 1997.
Mrs Deighton, of Remembrance Court, West Hill died 11 days later in Scarborough Hospital without regaining consciousness, her daughter Debbie Plaxton by her side.
Following a huge murder hunt Kevin Storey, 36, of no fixed abode – but who had been living in Driffield – was arrested and charged with Winnie’s murder.
But his trial at Sheffield Crown Court sensationally collapsed after three weeks due to what the judge described as “unreliable” evidence.
Now Humberside Police’s Major Incident Team have appealed to the public for help in bringing her killer to justice.
At the time of the original investigation residents on West Hill were praised for their help in trying to track down the killer, and once again officers will be focussing their enquiries on the West Hill estate.
With advances in DNA technology they hope that materials from the original crime scene will help them catch her killer.
Det Chief Insp Matt Hutchinson, of the Major Incident Team, said: “The DNA will help us to eliminate people from our enquiries. It will be a long process.
“We owe it to her and her family to find out who did this to her. Her killer has evaded justice for 15 years.”
Winnie’s family have been informed of the investigation and detectives are keeping them up to date with any developments.
At the time of her mother’s death Debbie spoke extensively to the Free Press about her heartbreak and urged anyone with information to come forward.
Speaking a year on from the death of her mother Debbie said: “I know I won’t be able to get on with my life until my mum’s killer is found and she can finally lay in peace.
“All I can hope is that the police solve everything and lock the person up, because nobody deserves to go through what my mum went through.”
