'Brid will always be special to me'

NATIONAL television star and huge Bridlington fan Jane McDonald is looking forward to her return to the town and has told the Free Press how special the resort is to her.

Wakefield-born Jane first found fame on nineties reality television show The Cruise and her regular appearances on award-winning ITV programme Loose Women have made her a household name.

As well as earning a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first artist to top the album charts without a prior release, Jane has previously sold out the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and recently scooped the Yorkshire Woman of the Year award.

But she told the Free Press that she still has fond memories of where it all began - at the former Harbour Lites pub in Bridlington - and that her feet are still very firmly on the ground.

"I have always loved Brid, I come back every year because I just love the place and my auntie still lives here so I have very strong ties to the town.

"After all, I started my career in the Harbor Lites! I used to get terrible stage fright, but I'd get so much encouragement that I'd end up on the stage and would love it, so Brid will always be special to me."

Jane added that Yorkshire concerts are her favourite - and that the Bridlington performances are always something she looks forward to.

"There is always a special magic when you perform back home - and I love being able to go back to my own bed at the end of the night!

"The Brid crowd come for a really good night out, the reception I get is always amazing and it's also great that my family and friends can come and see what I do, my mum will be in the Brid audience!

"When I first visited the Spa after its renovation I couldn't believe how fantastic it was.

"I think it's great for Brid to have a venue like that bringing in artists you might never have expected to perform in the town."

Jane said that singing live on stage remains her passion and that she would give up her television work 'without a doubt' if she had to choose between her regular concert tours or her TV appearances.

"I love what I do. The show is absolutely brilliant without me in it," she joked. "And nobody can express that feeling you get when you walk out to a full theatre.

"Nobody could prepare me for the reaction I got in Bridlington, it's one of the reasons I can't wait to come back!"

Jane described her current show as 'Saturday night television like we used to get' and feels like she is heading a variety revival.

"Judging by the response we are getting, there is a desperate need for it. People just want to come out and have a good night out," she said.

The formula has obviously proved a winner as dozens of Jane's shows sold out last year, leading to many extra dates being added for this year's tour.

Jane will first perform at Bridlington Spa on April 3 and has added an extra date, Saturday August 7, to cope with demand.
