BREAKING NEWS: Swine flu confirmed in East Riding

A TEENAGE boy is one of the first victims of swine flu in the East Riding.

The boy from Beverley, who is a year 10 pupil at the exclusive fee-paying Hymers School in Hull, is one of two people in the East Riding who have been confirmed as having swine flu by the Health Protection Agency.

The two new cases bring the East Yorkshire total so far to three – an 11-year-old girl became the first Hull victim to be diagnosed, almost two weeks ago.

She has now recovered and is back at school.

The two new victims, who are unrelated, are said to have been treated with anti-viral drugs and are responding well.

Last month, a child from Danby, near Whitby, was confirmed has having contracted the virus.

Dr Peter Brambleby, Director of Public Health at NHS North Yorkshire and York, said: "If you or your child develops flu-like symptoms our advice is to stay at home and contact your GP or NHS Direct. Each case will be assessed and, if necessary, testing and treatment will be provided.

"Potential swine flu sufferers should not visit their GP surgery or go into hospitals as this may spread germs to others.

"Unless people have flu-like symptoms or are being tested for Swine Flu, there is no need to stop normal everyday activities such as going to work or school.

"The single most effective action the public can take to protect themselves and others from infection is to follow good hygiene practices, such as catching coughs and sneezes in tissues and washing hands regularly.

"These simple steps will have a major role to play in slowing the spread of any strain of influenza."
