Barber John dies after reaching 100

A FORMER Bridlington hairdresser who celebrated his 100th birthday last October has died.

John Pinder, a bachelor, who had been living at Sandy Lane care home in Bridlington, ran the family barber’s business for many years.

Born in Bridlington at his parents’ house, which used to overlook the harbour, he moved to Sandy Lane two-and-a-half years ago from his home in Headlands Close.

After going to Bridlington School he joined his father Harry Pinder in the family gents’ and then ladies’ hairdressing business, which dated back to Victorian times.

They had premises in the long gone arcade in Prince Street overlooking the harbour and for many years in Marlborough Terrace, where he worked cutting men’s hair until he retired at the age of 79.

Regular clients included the Wickham-Boynton family of Burton Agnes Hall, the boarders at Bridlington School and during the war TE Lawrence – Lawrence of Arabia – who spent time in Bridlington working on RAF launches in the harbour.

Mr Pinder served in the RAF as ground crew in Iceland and then at Holme On Spalding Moor, where he worked on the fire engines at the base.

Afterwards he resumed work at the Marlborough Terrace shop.

When it eventually closed, many of the fittings were given to Sewerby Hall for display.

Mr Pinder died on May 29 and his funeral was on June 8 at East Riding Crematorium.
