Arty flowers in village church

ART for art's sake was the theme of this summer's flower festival at St Michael's Church, Bempton.

Displays inspired by aboriginal art, modern musicals and sculptures illuminated the church throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.

Church warden Andrew Graham said the festival had been a great success.

"It has been really good," said Mr Graham, "The flower festival has been here for many years and it's nice to keep it up. Everybody puts a lot of hard work into it."

Graham's brother, Robert, tried his hand at an arrangement for the first time and was pleased with his Phantom of the Opera- themed display.

"I actually really enjoyed it," he said.

"This was my first attempt and once I got going it was fun, I think I'd do it again."
