MEMBERS of Bridlington’s lifeboat crew received medals from Queen Elizabeth to mark her Diamond Jubilee at the last meeting of Bridlington Town Council.

Bridlington Mayor Coun Michael Charlesworth presented more than 20 medals to crew members who have served for five years or more.

The recipients at RNLI Bridlington join many other RNLI crew members around the UK recognised by Her Majesty as she celebrates 60 years on the throne.

The criteria for the award of a medal was for an individual to have served five or more years and be in service on 6th February 2012 – the anniversary of the Queen’s succession to the throne.

Stewart McKie, coxswain of Bridlington Lifeboat, said: “It was a nice honour to be asked to the town council meeting and to receive the medals.

“A few of us have the medals from the Golden Jubilee ten years ago.

“More than 20 of us were there at the presentation, and it was a rare chance afterwards for us to be able to get together and have a drink and a chat, as someone has to be manning the boats.”

Mr McKie said more than 20 of his 35 man crew received the medals. Speaking at the town council meeting, Mayor Coun Charlesworth said: “The RNLI is a huge asset to the town and I know that the work they do is appreciated by everyone.

“I would like to congratulate all of you receiving this medal and wish you all plain sailing in the future.”

Col Iain Bryce, honorary president of the Bridlington RNLI station, said at the meeting: “I know the crew are most grateful for receiving these medals, and grateful to the mayor and the town council for welcoming them here tonight. There are around 250 lifeboat stations around the coast, and while I’m sure that a lot of people say this in other areas, there are no doubts that the Bridlington RNLI is one of the best.”
