THE East Riding is to receive £5.5 million of Government funding to help roll out its rural broadband plan.

The regional funding is part of the £530 million which the Government will invest into rolling out their rural broadband programme across the whole country.

The Government has set itself the goal of ensuring that the UK has the best superfast broadband network in Europe by 2015.

Its aim is to provide everyone in the UK with access to broadband speeds of at least 2Mbps, and ensure that superfast broadband is available to 90% of people in each local authority.

The news of the funding approval has been welcomed by the MP for Bridlington Greg Knight and East Riding Councillors who say it will be a boost for local residents and businesses.

Mr Knight said, “This is great news. By 2015 everyone in East Yorkshire will have access to broadband of at least 2 Mbps.

“This is very significant for rural areas and will provide a boost to farmers, people trying to work from home and also the people running businesses which rely on e-commerce. From 2015 geographical isolation will no longer mean digital isolation”.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, deputy leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said the Council were delighted by the news.

Coun Owen said: “Access to a reliable broadband service is an important part of modern life and, in a rural area like the East Riding, is vital in helping residents communicate with family and friends and for the local economy in terms of business prosperity.

“The next step for the council will be to start negotiation with appropriate suppliers.”
