20 new jobs as Star Buys is born

STAR BUYS has brought the town's Woolworths building back to life – and created around 20 local jobs.

And there have already been more than 200 applications for the positions.

After weeks of speculation about the future of the Prince Street building, which had stood empty since the demise of Woolworths in early January, the Starbuys store opened its doors on Saturday.

Star Buys is a branch of The Yorkshire Trading Company, which already has a shop in Prospect Street, but a spokeswoman from the company's head office in Driffield said the new store was aiming at a slightly different market.

"There will be a fairly obvious connection because we own both stores," she said. "You will see some similar lines, but the position of the new store is very much towards the beach so it will have a slightly different look and feel to it, catering more for holidaymakers and people in caravans.

"One of the things we are looking to do in the future are foodstuffs, such as tins suitable for caravan holiday makers."

The store has already recruited eight staff members, two of whom were former Woolworths employees, and is still receiving applications for around 12 more sales positions.

Mark Johnson, operations manager for Star Buys, said that all the positions were brand new – they are not moving staff from other stores to Bridlington – and added that the response to the store opening had been 'tremendous'.

"We are delighted to be rejuvenating an empty store at the heart of the town," said Mr Johnson.

"There are over 500 lines unique to this branch, including a huge section at the front of the store where each item is 1 or less.

"We will be providing our usual huge range of quality bargains, which will be good for local Bridlington people, day-trippers and holidaymakers alike."
