Yorkshire Marina will be a huge success
I am responding to the article regarding the latest design for the proposed Yorkshire Marina at Bridlington.
I cannot comment properly on this design as I would need to see the detailed drawings.
However, having seen East Riding of Yorkshire Council's first set of detailed design plans for the larger marina, there was nothing wrong whatsoever with that proposal at all.
Some people are forgetting the bigger picture.
I have deliberately used the title of the Yorkshire Marina at Bridlington as this marina has a wider and bigger impact than just Bridlington and the surrounding area.
The recent participation of the Hull and Humber Yacht in the Round the World Clipper Race is proof of that.
Ultimately, the Hull and Humber Yacht will want to be berthed in the marina to do race training in our magnificent bay and indeed take part in international racing events held here.
It will act as a catalyst right across the business and social sectors, bringing additional and much-needed investment to improve the environment overall.
The level of the overall benefit returned to the community is dependant on the level of the initial investment put in (the Spa's refurbishment is testament to that) so I personally advocate a very minimum of 350 berths with the built-in flexibility of expanding to 500 berths later as demand increases for the full range of yachts in use today, including at least six berths for super-yachts.
My personal contacts in the super-yacht world in southern France have confirmed that berths in the UK are at a premium and that, due to our location, yachts transiting from the Mediterranean or the Caribbean to northern Europe and Scandinavia for the fjords, etc would indeed use this marina if built with all the proper facilities.
Why delay? The yacht market is not generally affected by a recession by the very nature of its market sector and by the time it is built the current economic climate will have long gone and growth returned so the marina will come on stream just as all the markets are emerging and expanding once again.
Marketed properly, both nationally and internationally, this marina by its very location will perform beyond all current expectations.
Build this marina with full confidence, knowing it will herald a new economic and social era of steady and sustained growth that Bridlington will never look back from.
I have very strong links with the town in that my grandfather Jack S Wright was mayor of Bridlington on two occasions and received the freedom of the borough and the town for his services to the public.
I have lived here as a resident and my eldest daughter, now 21, has grown up here as well.
I have also done a lot of work locally with Young Enterprise which, with my business experience both regionally and nationally, with links overseas, has provided me with a unique insight and overview of what the marina can and will do for Bridlington and the region.
