Proper marina will succeed
THE agreement on the marina is, I hope, good news.
Whether it will actually come to fruition in my lifetime I do not know but I am certaiinly not holding my breath.
If the parties can get their heads together, let's get on with it – we've waited long enough.
There are waiting lists at all marinas as far as I am aware and this area would be a good sailing area, better than others on the North East coast.
I am sure that if the project is done properly and all the services provided that are associated with a marina, there will be no difficulty in filling it with boats from local areas and further afield.
The interests of fishermen would seem to be provided for and the interests of the pleasure cruise operators, who rely on access to the harbour, will also no doubt be looked after.
The cost of a berth on a pontoon as quoted in the article appears to be good value if the facilities are there.

THE proposed design and size of the new marina looks like a good plan, providing the area of support and infrastructure is of a similar standard.
The current shops and food outlets would need to be relocated or upgraded to a Continental style because we would need more upmarket shops and restaurants.
Other parts of the UK, particularly in the south, have managed it but the northern marinas seem to be just boat havens on the back of housing developments.
If you are going to do it, do it with style and you will not have to worry about size or capacity.
On a technical note, the current harbour has a sewer and industrial waste outlet on the west side; would this be redirected?
