A COUPLE who met while working only a few doors apart are set to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

George St Quinton, who ran a newsagents, met his future wife Jean while she worked at a branch of WH Smith’s in Hull, and said “she caught my eye then and has done ever since”.

The couple, of St James Road in Bridlington, courted for around three years before marrying in 1951.

They celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary today, March 10.

Mr and Mrs St Quinton tied the knot at Holy Trinity Church in Hull, but have lived in Bridlington for most of their married lives.

George, 86, and Jean, 83, have three children, Denise, Howard and Nicholas.

They also have four grandchildren, Neil, Claire, Thomas and Hanna.

Explaining the secret of their long marriage, Mrs St Quinton said: “We just try to have a little laugh about most things, even it is about each other. We try not to think too old, and we try and keep as active as we can.”

The couple will be celebrating their anniversary at a large family get-together in Grangeover Sands.

“We’ve been very happy together, I think it’s all about give and take,” said George with a smile. “I give and she takes!”
