LARGER than life landlord Gerry Ellis hopes he will be buying a new pair of swim shorts before long.
The jovial mine host of The Rose and Crown Inn, on Flamborough’s High Street, was last seen sporting a pair emerging from the frozen sea off South Landing on Boxing Day when he raised £750 for Flamborough Pre-School in their second annual festive dip.
But if everything goes according to plan, he will also need a completely new wardrobe.
He has set himself the task of losing at least five stone in weight by next Boxing Day and his next fund raising dip, and making even more money for the pre-school with his sponsored slim.
For 6ft 5in tall, 21 stone seven pound Gerry, it is quite a challenge but he has already got plenty of supporters.
Sponsorship, at so much a stone lost, currently stands at £150 a stone.
Gerry, 50, hopes a combination of diet, less booze, and exercise in a gym, will do the trick, bringing him down to around 16 stones with his 44in waistline down to somewhere between 36 and 38 inches.
He has already given up his favourite food, Chinese meals, and plans to cut his regular six or seven pints of lager a day down to four.
“That’s going to be a hard one,” he said.
But he is delighted so many of his regulars, who supported his Boxing Day Dip exploits, are behind him again.
“They are all going to be a great help to me, there are so many of them and it is a great incentive not to let them down,” said Gerry, who used to be around 16 stone, but piled it on over the past year or so.
When he first met his wife Janice, who said she would try and lose a bit of weight herself to support him, he weighed 13 stone.
If anyone else wants to sponsor him to raise funds for Flamborough Pre-School, a registered charity, they can pick up a sponsor form from the Rose and Crown or give him a call on 850455.
