JACK’S Fish and Chip shop is back in business next Wednesday after a fire forced its closure in March.
The popular chippy on Hilderthorpe Road went up in smoke on March 4 when a fire started in an extractor fan, but now after weeks of hard work refitting the premises, it will re-open on April 20 at 11.30am.
For Mandy Stirk who manages the family-run business, it will be a huge relief to be back at work after seven-weeks out of action.
She said: “For thirty years we’ve been here we’ve never had a day off, so to be off for seven weeks not knowing what to do with myself was very hard.
“We’ve more or less had a full refit, you’re looking at tens of thousands of pounds being spent, but we’re just so glad to be back, it’s brilliant.”
Mandy said that she has missed her regular customers and is looking forward to welcoming them all back next week.
“Whenever I’ve walked round town I’ve been asked by people when we’re re-opening and I’m glad that now I can tell them.
“It’s brilliant that we’ve managed to get all the work done before Easter,” she said, adding that the shop’s eleven staff were also keen to get back to work.
Nobody was injured in the fire that caused smoke-damage to the building on the evening of March 4.
Three fire engines attended the scene but staff and customers escaped unharmed as the fire had started to the rear of the building.
