A funeral service was held at St Margaret’s Church, Beswick, on Monday, 30 March for Mrs Isabel Joyce Duggleby. formerly of Beswick Hall, who died in Southlands Residential Nursing Home on 13 March.
She was 99.
Joyce was born on 22 May, 1915 at Belgravia Square in Bridlington, She was the second child of Beatrice and Bernard Wortley. Joyce had an older brother also named Bernard. Sadly their father died in 1917 when Joyce was only two years old. When their mother remarried to Captain James Marshall, a Master Mariner with Ellerman Wilson Line they moved to live on Beverley Road in Hull. She was educated at Hull Convent and also on Beverley Road.
Joyce met her future husband, Derrick Duggleby, when she stayed at Kiplingcoates station just before the 2nd World War. They married at St John’s Church, Newland in Hull on 4 February, 1940. In the early days of their marriage they lived in a bungalow in Burstwick. They went on to have two sons Michael and John. On 4 April, 1947 the family moved into Beswick Hall. Joyce became a full time farmers wife, a role that had many and varied demands in those days.
Joyce had many interests. She loved it when Derrick, John and Michael were hunting with the Holderness Hunt. She enjoyed holidays in Cornwall and the Lake District and when John and Michael were away at school Joyce and Derrick would go otter hunting in the Northern rivers. She also loved her Border Terriers. Joyce also enjoyed going to Trinity House in Hull, where her brother Bernard was Master Warden three times.
When four grandchildren came along she took great delight in looking after them.
Joyce and Derrick remained at Beswick Hall until 1976. In that year they moved to live at Brickyard Farm to allow John and his family to move into the Hall. After Derrick died in April, 1981 Joyce remained at Brickyard Farm until April 2005 when she moved into accommodation at Abbeyfield House in Beverley. In October 2010 she moved to Southlands Residential Home in Cranswick.
Joyce was a real character with a passion for everything she did.
She will be greatly missed by her family and everyone who knew her.
