A MAN has been sentenced to community service with 40 hours’ unpaid work for handling a stolen BMX bike.
Mark Brearley, 38, of Trinity Road, Bridlington, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared at Bridlington Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday.
The court heard Brearley sold the Bos BMX bike, which belonged to a Steven Cowell, for £25 at Cash Express in Bridlington. He was later arrested by police.
Mitigating, Martin Hawes said: “When interviewed he said he believed the bike was stolen. “He was approached by a person who knew he had an account at Cash Express.
“He was asked to get rid of the bike and received £10 for doing so.
“He was known to staff at Cash Express.”
Brearley, who was already the subject of a probation order was said by Jon Wild of the probation service to have “engaged quite well with the order.”
Presiding magistrate Martin Dodgson recommended the defendant should join a rehabilitation programme and ordered he pay costs of £65.
