When Carl McCoid committed to his first Miley Cyrus tattoo four years ago, he never thought it would lead to a full-blown addiction to being ‘inked’ with the popstar’s face.
The 42-year-old business owner from Thixendale Road now dons 29 “dedication” tattoos and even named one of his daughters after the ‘twerking’ superstar.
Since 2011 Carl has adorned his body with more and more portaits of Miley Cyrus, spending more than £3,000 on the tattoo tributes in the process.
But the Bridlington father-of-three said he had a sudden change of heart when Miley said his tattoos were “ugly” and “creepy” during several interviews.
“I got my first tattoo of Miley after I was divorced in 2010, but it got to the point where it was getting obsessive. Right now I have 29 tattoos done and have spent £2,800.
“I never thought I would regret it.”
Speaking to an American interviewer, Miley, a former Disney star said: “There’s a dude that holds a record of the most pictures of my face, he has like 18 pictures of my face and they’re really ugly.”
The scantily clad star even blocked Carl on twitter after the extent of his obsession with her face and he was even branded a ‘stalker’ by American media. Now Carl has made the decision to have a selection of tattoos removed.
“I’m only regretting them now,” he added. “I never thought about it too much, but they have had a psychological affect on me.
“Then she mentioned they were creepy in an interview. It made me realise I didn’t like them.”
Carl plans to have three of his portrait tattoos laser-removed, an expensive ordeal which could last years and cost far more than the original tattoos.
He hopes a renewed appearance will help him meet a girlfriend and give him a fresh outlook on life so he can “look to the future.”
No stranger to the lime light, Carl has made appearances in several television shows including My Tattoo Addiction and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
Carl’s latest decision has now been picked up by the national press along with the producers behind TV show Tattoo Disasters UK.
“I’m a little nervous about it” he added. “I just let everything out. It’s going to focus on how I felt when Miley said she didn’t like the tattoos. It’s going to be emotional.
But despite his unusual appearance coupled with the media storm swirling around him, Carl’s friends maintain there is more to him than meets the eye.
His co-worker 47-year-old Alison Buckley said: “I think he’s doing the right thing by having some removed. I’ve been telling him for quite a while to tone them down a bit.
“At first I thought ‘oh God’, but I got used to him and saw beyond the tattoos and he’s actually a really nice guy.”
Her 20-year-old daughter Larissa Buckley, who also works with Carl, added: “I’ve known him for three years. I thought it was a bit odd. I took him at face value.
“You see what other people are saying about him, they must think he’s a right weirdo! But when you take time to know him there really is a lot more to it.”
You can catch Carl’s story on Spike Freeview channel 31 on Tuesdays at 9pm in late June, and later in the year on Channel 5.
