The first ever Hinge Walk raised hundreds of pounds for the Hinge Centre, that provides essential support for disadvantaged youngsters in the town, as well as Bridlington’s homeless population.

Chris West, of West BS and who is also chairman of charity’s board of directors, said: “We had more than 100 walkers and the response was very, very good.

“We are happy with the day and it caused a lot of awareness about the Hinge Centre. It was, without a doubt, a success.

“I don’t think people realised how much work we do in Bridlington.”

The Hinge Centre at Field Road provides support to young, disadvantaged people in the community and also homeless people.

Last year alone the charity lent a helping hand to more than 300 homeless people in Bridlington.

Mr West added: “I think it is a very worthwhile charity that offers a lot of services.

“We get a lot of people
referred to us who we counsel and help find work and
accommodation for.

“It was originally for disadvantaged young people and teenagers who had been separated from their families.

“From that, we had homeless people being directed to us because we have the
resources.”

The Hinge Walk on Sunday June 26 raised more than £750, which will go towards supporting the charity’s work with vulernable people in the town.

Walkers of all abilities had the choice of setting out on two routes for Sunday’s event.

The three-mile Silver Walk began at either the Ship Inn at Sewerby or South Shore Car Park, and was followed by a stroll to the Harbour and back.

The six-mile Gold Walk also set off from either the Ship Inn at Sewerby or South Shore Car Park, followed by a trek to the alternative starting point and back again.

Mr West said a number of walkers who were not originally participating in the walk decided to get on board after hearing about the event on the day itself.

He added: “30 to 40 per cent of the people didn’t know anything about it until we spoke to them as they were walking past and asked if they wanted to do it for charity.”

He added: “We also had quizzes for children and eye-spy and gave them each a stick of rock.”

Mr West added the Hinge Walk is planned again for next year and hopes it will become an annual event in the future.
