Flags were waved and cheers were heard along Bridlington’s North Promenade when more than 20 service users took part in a sponsored bike ride which has so far raised over £1,500 for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s All Ride scheme.
The sponsored event was organised and led by Bethany Playforth with the support of her personal assistant Melanie Tebbett.
Bethany has developed a passion for cycling after first using a wheelchair adapted bike through the All Ride cycle hire scheme in Bridlington which was launched last June.
Bethany, who is physically disabled and attends Priory View Day Centre, in Bridlington, wanted to raise as much money as possible for a wheelchair adapted bike for the innovative scheme.
And there was no shortage of support from the families, friends and carers of those service users from Priory View Day Centre who took part in the sponsored bike ride on Tuesday 14 April.
John Fortnum, team leader at Priory View, said: “The support was amazing. Everyone was waving to Bethany as she cycled by, stopping her to put money in her collection bucket, while land train passengers waved and cheered as they travelled passed. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by everyone.”
Participants either cycled or walked a one mile route from the Bridlington Coastguard Station to Sewerby Hall, or a two mile route from the All Ride base to Sewerby Hall with the help and support of carers, day centre staff and disability community coaches from the council’s Sport, Play and Arts Service.
Bethany crossed the finishing line, declaring “I did it, I did it” and said afterwards: “I’m really tired but I have enjoyed organising the event. Please support the All Ride scheme if you can – just use it!”
Bethany, and Mel, have also thanked everyone who has supported the event.
The event was the perfect warm up for Bethany who on 1 May, supported by Mel, will be waving the starters flag at the Tour de Yorkshire when it departs from outside the Spa Bridlington with friends James Kilner, John Turner and Leona Hull.
