THREE cars were damaged by an out of control people carrier which ended up on the pavement in Old Town.

High Street was closed to through traffic for a short time from about 12 noon today while vehicles and debris were removed from the narrow road.

Local residents say they were amazed no-one was injured because the normally busy and narrow pavements were almost empty at the time.

In what appeared to be a freak accident, the woman driver of the Ford Galaxy people carrier is understood to have been moving the automatic car slightly forward in a line of parked cars when it suddenly shot ahead forward pushing a Toyota Yaris parked in front of it into the back of a vehicle outside the offices of TD Travel.

The woman driver, who has a disability, then tried to get the vehicle off the road by going onto the pavement. It clipped the sides of the parked cars and ended up jammed between a building and one of the cars and also colliding with the rear of a Jaguar car at the front of the line of parked vehicles.

The woman driver was shaken, but uninjured and was taken to Scarborough Hospital for a check-up
