Former Bridlington mayor and long-serving councillor Ray Allerston has died, aged 80.

Coun Allerston, who represented Bridlington North ward on the town council and Bridlington Central and Old Town ward on East Riding of Yorkshire Council, died yesterday.

He was one of the few remaining SDP councillors in the country, and had served the party alongside his wife Christine for many years.

Current mayor Coun Shelagh Finlay said: “All his colleagues on the town council and the staff are deeply saddened by the news and offer our thoughts and prayers to his wife Christine and the family at this sad time.”

Coun Stephen Parnaby, OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, paid tribute to Coun Allerston.

He said: “He will always be remembered as a genuine character and a good ward councillor. His own very personal style and his passion will be remembered by us all, and he will be missed by his colleagues.”
