Mystery knitted puffins have been spotted appearing around Bridlington without warning.

The cheeky looking creatures have lined the harbour and are causing a stir amongst visitors to the town – and in pictures on Facebook and Twitter.

However the strange appearances have an explanation - they form part of an RSPB initiative to get visitors along to see the birds at their Bempton centre.

Maria Prchlik, of RSPB Bempton, said: “We had a terrible puffin wreck when we lost lots of birds as they were killed, including lots of puffins.

“We are trying to reassure people that there are puffins to see at the centre.

“The knitted puffins are following the non breeding birds back to the cliff from the harbour.

“Everyone loves the puffins and gives them personalities. We have had people from all over the world coming to see them.”
