A FORMER Headlands School pupil recently achieved her goal of graduating as a Physical Training Instructor with the Royal Air Force.

Ellie Roebuck, who celebrated her 21st birthday yesterday (Wednesday, April 18), was presented with her graduation certificate and corporal’s stripes at RAF Cosford on March 29.

Her proud parents Jayne and Michael, together with several other family members and friends, were at the ceremony to witness the occasion and join Ellie and her fellow students in the celebrations afterwards.

From an early age Ellie showed a great interest in many sports, especially football, and was a regular member of Bridlington Rangers Spartans at U9, U10 and U11s.

She won many trophies during that time and was the first ever girl to captain the Hilderthorpe Junior School football team.

With FA Rules not allowing girls to play alongside boys from U12 onwards she joined Cottingham based Westella & Willerby Girls where she went on to lift more silverware.

Besides football she also showed talent in athletics, at one time holding the 800 metres record at Headlands School, tennis where she became a Junior champion at Bridlington Tennis Club, was for a short time a member of Bridlington Road Runners, and badminton when in her early teens she regularly competed against seniors in the Bridlington Badminton League.

At 17-years-old, Ellie decided to leave school and pursue a career that involved her natural talent and love of sport and applied to join the RAF as a PTI.

After a long and anxious application process she was successful and started her basic training at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire.

It looked at one stage that injuries would prevent her achieving her goal, but she worked very hard and eventually passed out and was posted to RAF Cosford for a 38 week intensive physical training course.

As expected this was a gruelling task but at last, after almost two years of hard work, Ellie is now a fully qualified PTI and has been posted back to Halton where she will be training the new recruits.

One thing is for certain, she will understand their feelings and do her best to ensure that they too achieve their ambitions.
