As the first customers set foot in Bridlington's new £25 million leisure centre, officials are touting a new age of regeneration and increased tourism to the town.
The state-of-the art facility opened its doors at 6.30 this morning and Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of the council, was on hand to greet the very first customers - the first two of which received free year-long memberships.
Councillor Parnaby said : “This is a very exciting day for Bridlington. I am delighted that we are now able to welcome customers to this stunning facility, which will totally transform what Bridlington has to offer all year round for residents and visitors, whatever the weather. I am particularly proud that we have been able to deliver this Leisure Centre on time and within budget.
“The interest so far in this facility has been truly overwhelming – we estimate we have already welcomed around 10,000 people to the centre over the last ten days since we launched the free tours, and inductions for members.
“This major investment by the council is a huge vote of confidence in the future of Bridlington. It represents the next step forward in the regeneration of the town, alongside our significant programme of works in Hilderthorpe Road, and the exciting plans for the station area and other town centre features. All this follows on from the refurbishment of Sewerby Hall and Gardens and the huge continuing success of The Spa Bridlington.
“I hope that people will make the most of East Riding Leisure Bridlington, which has so much to offer for health, fitness, and fun – to say nothing of its stunning location!”
East Riding Leisure Bridlington was funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council (£20.9 million); the Coastal Communities Fund (£2.1m); and Sport England (£2m).
Sport England Director of Property, Charles Johnston, said: “Congratulations to the council for delivering this fantastic leisure centre which makes being active accessible, affordable and fun. Having access to quality facilities like this can be a big draw for people thinking about getting active, and that’s why we are delighted to invest £2 million of National Lottery funding in the centre. Thanks to the impressive range of sports and activities on offer, it really can be enjoyed by everyone in Bridlington, and I wish it every continued success.
The new Centre features a superb range of sports and leisure facilities including a 25-metre six-lane swimming pool with learner pool; a Splash Zone fun pool with two interactive Water Slides and Waterplay features, such as a giant Tipping Bucket; the Clip ‘n Climb area, with eight climbing walls, suitable for anybody aged four and upwards; a 100-station Tone Zone with a mixture of cardio and weights; a health suite with steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi; an exercise studio; a spin studio; a six-court sports hall; two squash courts; meeting rooms; spaces for children’s parties; and the Café Vibe (inside and outside).
