CHRISTINE Bowtell has sailed through the first round of the Miss Scarborough and District competition and is one step closer to the prestigious Miss England final.

The 24-year-old dental nurse from Bridlington impressed judges at the first heat and is now through to the glittering final at Scarborough Spa’s Grand Hall this Sunday, May 15.

There Christine will battle it out against 13 other women in a bid to be crowned Miss Scarborough and District, with the winner going on to represent the region in the prestigious Miss England contest this summer.

Christine said that she was thrilled to be Bridlington’s only representative in the competition.

“The whole thing is lovely,” she said. “When they rang to tell me I’d got through I was just about to go to a Zumba class and I was just so excited.

“After my interview, I was really hoping I’d get through and I said to my partner that I couldn’t have done any more than I did, so I was really pleased that it was enough to get me through to the final.”

Christine, of Great Barn Street, will now be judged in three main categories in the final on Sunday; the ‘Tropicana’ swimwear section, a ‘James Bond’ evening wear theme and an ‘Eco’ category for which she will have to make an eco-friendly outfit.

She is already hard at work preparing her costumes for the final and she thanked her sponsor, Simon Bowtell, of the Black Cat Tattoo Studio in Filey, for his help in funding her entry.

She has also urged Bridlington residents to support her bid by voting for her over the telephone by texting 08Christine to 84205, or calling 0901 6561505. Texts cost 60p plus one standard network message while calls cost 61p. The lines close on Sunday evening during the show at 9pm. The girl with the most phone votes will secure a place in the final 12.

Tickets for the final are selling fast, with more than 200 people having already booked their seats for the show.

They coast £12.50 and are available from the Scarborough Evening News office, Desire in Belle Vue Street, Filey, or from organiser Diane Yalezo on 07580447459.

The event is sponsored by Opera House Casino and organised by Desire, of Filey, in conjunction with the Evening News.

Doors open at 6pm for a 7pm start, and there will be an after disco until midnight.
