POLICE are investigating an alleged assault during a football match in Bridlington at the weekend.

The incident occured as Bridlington Snooker Centre beat Bridlington Rovers 4-2 in a Driffield League encounter.

One of the Rovers players has claimed he was punched in the face by an opponent and had to go to hospital.

A Humberside Police spokesman confirmed: “An allegation has been made by a 17-year-old boy that he was assaulted whilst playing football on Saturday 15 January at the Gypsey Road Playing Field in Bridlington.

“The victim states he attended hospital to receive treatment for a facial injury, possibly a fracture to the nose.

“Officers have seen the victim and taken a statement from him and the investigation is ongoing.”

No action was taken by the referee, Mick Baker, and the league will wait for the outcome of the police enquiry before taking any action of their own.
