YOU could be in the running to become an East Coast beauty queen and automatically go through to the grand final of Miss England.

If you are lucky enough to win that title then the next stop is Miss World.

The gateway to this opportunity is to be in the final of this year’s Miss Scarborough and district contest which will take place in a glittering awards ceremony at the Spa Ocean Room, Scarborough, on May 15.

The popular competition is open to girls aged 17-24 with a YO postcode – so that includes Bridlington and the surrounding areas.

Local girl Alanya Machen, 20, of Lamplugh Road, Bridlington, entered last year’s Miss Scarborough. Although she did not win the Miss Scarborough title, she did win the title of Miss Eco.

Alanya said she has had a great year but her title is about to come to an end.

She wants to go out with a bang and is doing a sponsored parachute jump in June and hopes to organise a cake sale at Bridlington’s Iceland store on March 24, to raise money for the Samaritans.

All Miss Scarborough entrants will go through to the regional heat in April. Successful entrants will then be short-listed for the final.

Organiser Diane Yalezo, owner of prom dress shop Desire in Filey, hopes to build the event’s reputation and is urging girls to get their entries in.

She said: “I’m hoping to see a lot of new faces and I hope the girls from last year will come back and enter.

“It’s a really good event and this year is going to be bigger and better!

“We’re taking it back to the Scarborough Spa Ocean room, there’ll be a disco after the event, it should be a highlight evening of the year.”
