A COUNCILLOR has spoken out after travellers set up camp on Bessingby Road in Bridlington.

Coun Cyril Marsburg, who represents the south ward on Bridlington Town Council, said he was “disappointed” that after East Riding Council invested in a new gypsy site on Woldgate, travellers have set up camp elsewhere in the town – close to the McDonald’s restaurant on the Bessingby Retail Park.

A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “The council is aware of the caravans and is putting in place the appropriate actions including statutory welfare checks and any necessary legal interventions.

“This will be done as expeditiously as possible.”

Coun Marsburg said: “Considering that a lot of public money has been spent on the site at Woldgate, which I opposed from the start as I thought the original site should have been improved, it is disappointing that travellers have set up elsewhere in Bridlington.

“I believe that those camping illegally should be prosecuted as trespassers.”
